These funds will be used to purchase equipment for our new Mothers and Babies House in Ceduna, some of which will be put towards the purchase of a generator, as the house cannot open its doors for vulnerable, expectant mothers until we have a generator for back up power in place.
The house is a new Save the Children initiative, as a safe house providing a supported accommodation service for new and expectant mothers, thus seeking to reduce infant mortality rates in this area through the provision of safe, nurturing and supportive accommodation for Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Island women and their infants, immediately before birth and for up to three months after giving birth. The reason we have done this is because an Aboriginal or Torres-Strait Island baby born in South Australia is four times more likely to die than a non- indigenous baby. Aboriginal and Torres-Strait Island mothers are also 2-3 times more likely to experience adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes and are 2-5 times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications.
Save the Children has been working in South Australia for over 90 years and is one of Australia's largest aid and development agencies dedicated to helping children. We work hard to protect children from harm and help them access quality education and health services. We are also at the forefront of saving children's lives when disasters strike, and create lasting change for children and their families through our long-term development programs. We have programs in 31 countries, including Australia, where we work in every state and the Northern Territory.
The Adelaide Summer Orchestra will have a big impact on helping us make change for these women and their new babies helping give them the best start in life.
